Let's Return a Book with PAL, v.3.3
Scan in book barcode
Hit ENTER key if not overdue (or if overdue not paid), or
Type in amount paid if overdue and paid
The Returns Panel is reached by pressing menu choice # "3" from the Main Menu; or by pressing menu choice #"3" from the Circulation Menu (which is choice # "5" from the Main Menu).
In both cases you will be able to create new records but you will not be able to delete or edit records.
(If, for some reason, you need to delete or edit any return records, you can reach the Returns Panel as follows: press choice #"11" from Main Menu to reach Administrator's Menu, then choice #"6" from Administrator's Menu, and finally choice #"18" from All Panels menu. Reaching it off the Administrator's Menu you will be able to delete or edit any return records (however doing so is not recommended). Also note that there is a report to clear all circulation transactions at once (say, at beginning of new school year). You can reach this "Reset Circ System" report (deletes all payments, returns, and checkout records and cancels all holds) by choices "5", then "10", then "3" (from the main menu).
Return a book using the barcode scheme:
With PAL, v.3.3 you can return a large number of books very quickly. Simply scan in the book's barcode while still in browse mode. You do not need to press F9 ("create" mode). Then press ENTER if there is no overdue fine. The record will be automatically saved. That's it!
If the book is overdue you will be alerted by a beep and the amount due is automatically entered in the record.
If the patron pays you at this time you enter the amount paid in the "Paid" field.
If the patron has a good excuse you can type "cancel" or "c" in this field which will clear the charge (the patron will not be billed for this).
If the patron is not there (or if the patron is there but wishes to pay another time) then simply press ENTER to save the record.
When the patron pays at a later time (or if you want to clear the fine at a later time) go to the "Pay Fines" panel (menu choice "4" from the Main Menu or menu choice "11" from the Circulation Menu).
Return a book without using the barcode scheme:
Same as above except you can either type in the barcode (or the ID number) in the first field or you can press F9 ("Create" mode) and do an Up Arrow lookup on titles of all library items which are checked-out.
